About Us
Super-specialised International Tax Law practice founded in 2024
We adopt the philosophy that there is no better practice than good theory applied to a client’s bespoke needs. With strong academic and theoretical foundations, we invest heavily in academic work and continuing education. This enables us to deliver sound and practical solutions to our clients, and allows us to deliver the highest quality of work with utmost efficiency.
Expertise
We are highly specialised in international tax, tax controversy, and transfer pricing. Each one at JS&A has undergone advanced training in the field, and engages in continuous education and thought leadership activities to remain ahead of the curve.
Apart from our technical foundations, we enjoy looking for unconventional (but theoretically grounded) solutions for our clients.
Mission
It is our mission to provide the highest quality representation and advice to our clients with utmost efficiency in international tax matters.
Values
Perseverance
We persevere to achieve excellence in everything we do. We approach every case with a never-say-die attitude. Never taking our arguments for granted, we test them critically by playing devil’s advocate, which allows us to anticipate counter arguments in court and devise appropriate responses. We run our arguments past one of the sharpest legal minds in Justice Dr. B.N. Srikrishna who tests them most critically. We adopt a similar approach whilst writing opinions, and strive never to develop a tunnel vision. All our propositions, arguments and opinions undergo a thorough process of internal peer-review.
Integrity
It is essential for us to remain independent and dispassionate in the advice we provide to our clients. We refuse to issue opinions of convenience. For example, we issued a negative opinion on the MFN Controversy insofar as the interpretation of the law was concerned. This was despite the existence of three favourable judgements of the Delhi High Court on the issue, only to be vindicated by the Supreme Court’s decision. Conversely, we believe there are several arguments which have been decided incorrectly by courts and that there is room for correcting them with the correct argumentation. We remain fiercely critical in our reading of case law, and do not accept a position – positive or negative – merely because case law exists.
Creativity
We are deeply solution-oriented and believe that there is always a solution to a problem. We think laterally and avoid developing a tunnel-vision at all costs. This enables us to find unconventional, but effective solutions, which are grounded sound theoretical foundations. We spend a large part of our time conducting research projects, which allow us to anticipate issues, prepare for dealing with them, and delivering cutting edge solutions to clients when they arise.
Simplicity
We believe in deconstructing every complexity to its essence, and communicating our advice and arguments simply. Although always researched thoroughly, our work product is always succinct, and does not include passages quoted from court decisions. Each of our advocates undergoes intensive training in using language simply, clearly and accurately.
